  1. There are many superstitions about certain nights in the year. On the first of January or New Year's day, people consider it lucky if a dark haired boy comes in first in the morning. They believe that a dark haired man brings them good luck for the following year.
    On Shrove-Tuesday there is usually a feast of pancakes. When mixing the batter. the lady of the house drops in a little thimble, a bachelor's button, a little ring, a horse shoe and a little pig; The little thimble denotes:- that the lady who receives it will be an old maid, the bachelor's button represents an old bachelor, the ring means a marriage before a year, the horse shoe means good luck to the finder and the little pig means prosperity.
    On May night nearly all the farmers of this locality shut the cow houses fearing their neighbours might come to their cows to milk
