- Home Made Candles and Lamps
In the old days candles were made from melted fat which was poured into a mould.
A bit of cotton thread being run down through the middle of the mould: this was the wick.
Through the candles so made were soft they gave fairly good light.
When paraffin oil came into use a certain kind of lamp was used.
This was made out of a bottle with a cork.
The cork had a small piece of tube like a steel pen running through it. This was to carry a wick made of cotton down to the paraffin in the bottle.
These lamps were in common use in this locality.- Collector
