St. Martin's Night
Long ago it is said the only cow of a very poor woman fell sick. It happened to be St. Martin's night.
The poor woman prayed to God through the intercession of St. Martin for the restoration of the cow and said that if it got better she would kill something else that was of less value.
She killed a cock and sprinkled its blood around the door. Ever since that night there is generally a cock killed and its blood spilled on the eve of St. Martin. This is done to invoke the blessing of St. Martin for the year.
