  1. A Famous Man
    This district was noted for its famous men long ago.
    James Ryan, Ballyslateen, was the champion jumper of the world in 1898. he was a national teacher.
    His brother John Ryan, Ballycarron, was born in Ballyslateen and bought his present farm from Davitt. It belonged to the Ballycarron estate.
    James Ryan was famous at the hight jump and pole jump, he did six feet four inches in 1898. He died at a very early age.
