  1. Hedge schools existed here about ninety years ago.
    One of these was held in a barn on Mrs Ellen Maher's farm at Ballinastick, Parish of Gortnahoe, Barony of Slievardagh, County Tipperary. The Teacher was Thade Maher a native of the district
    All the teaching was done through the medium of English
    The subjects taught were Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. Geography was not taught.
    The children sat on stones when working Arithmetic or writing, the others standing round the master at oral English.
    Only slates were used for writing - it would appear that paper was never used.
    Pencils were procured from the bed of a neighbouring stream
    As each child entered it caught a lock of hair on its forehead and bowed in the direction of the master.
    The shin bone of a horse was left on a stone near the door and any child desiring to go out to attend to a call of
