    The townland contains the site of a church and a graveyard. The graveyard has been levelled and nobody remembers any burials to have take place there. It was a chapel of ease to Ballingarry. Peter's Pence was collected there in the thirteenth century.
    It also contains the site of one of the O'Marnell's Castles given by Cromwell in 1653 to Colonel Langley. The fort from which the name of the townland was derived is situated on Michael Maher's farm.
