  1. During the rebellion of 1798 a number of Irish men armed with pikes were on Slievenamon mountain. A Co Kilkenny man was going to join them. He was arrested near Nine Mile House by the British Military who were camped there. The English officer seeing that he was a fine looking man said he would give him one chance of his life and that was to fight one of his soldiers with a hand stick against a naked sword. They would not leave the Kilkenny the pike he carried in the fight against the soldier only a hand stick.
