  1. The last remains of an old castle are still to be seen in Brittas. This castle was once the residence of Sir John Bourke. This Sir John was a great defender of his religion and he was a great patriot. But he married one of the Thornton family who had a good slice of the planted land of Kinsale. This got him the disfavour of his friends, but owing to his good qualities he won back their friendship again. After some time he went to live at Brittas, where he stayed the three remaining years of his life.
    His battle was always a house of refuge for the hunted priests.
