    On the moat of Knockgraffon there used to stand a great castle with square towers.

    On the moat of Knockgriffin there used to stand a great castle with suare towers. Long ago, Lavraidh Loingseach, the ruler of all Eire, lived there.
    When Lavraidh became king he sent messengers round the country crying everywhere that no man in all the land was to cut his hair under pain of immediate death.
    Only once a year did he send for a barver to shave his face, the barber who was one day escorted to the great castle by guards never returned to his home. One day, after the king had ruled for many years, the guards marched to a hut quite near Knockgroffon, where there lived a young barber with his widow mother.
    "Come with us" they said to him. "The king wishes to be shaved." At the fatel word the young man turned pale and the old woman threw her arms around him with a shrill cry.
