  1. Long ago they used to have pipes made from a briar, but it would get burned with the tobaeco very quickli. This is the way they used to make these pipes, they used to get a thick briar and burn the centre out of it, with a piece of wire, because the centre of a briar is soft. Often they used to get an alder stick, and make a pipe out of it, because it has a soft centre too. When they would have the centre taken out they used to hole the part of the pipe that is going to be the head, and put in a small piece of a stick with a hole in it, for a stem, and if they could get a small bone it would do for a (bor)[?] stem too. Then the trouble was to get tobacco, it being very scarce then, and the leaves that would be left over after the tea, used to be dried and smoked in the pipes. Tobacco named "pigtail" used to be smoked, it was made into rolls, you would get a pennyworth of it if you liked. Tobacco used to be made at Mr.
