    during the Shrove.
Pan-cake Night. Shrove Tuesday night is known as pan-cake night. On that night pan-cakes were baked in every home on that night. The idea was to have a big feast before the Lent. Pancakes are still made in many homes in this district on that night. The girl who tossed a pan-cake without breaking it, was sure to be married before that night twelve-months. There was usually a dance in many homes on that night in days gone by.
    Chalk-Sunday.
This was the Sunday after Shrove Tuesday. Young girls and eligible bachelors were chalked going in to mass on that Sunday to point out to them that they did not get married during the Shrove. The Custom no longer exists, it was stopped during the war years when clothes got dear.
