    who missed his spellings got a fine beating with a sally switch.
    1871 Ryan's hedgeschool was a barn of John Dwyers Aughnagomaun.
    He taught more advanced subjects than Cullen or Doyle. No such thing as Irish was taught in any of these schools. Although Doyle was able to speak it he never taught it to his pupils.
    Stones were used as seats in these schools and the children had to write on their knees or kneel down and write on a rough seat provided around the walls.
    Ryan remained only eight months and then the present Ballytarsna National School was opened about 1872.
