  1. An old man said on one occasion he was taken to make a match for a young man. When they arrived at the house, he asked the mother of the girl how much money did she require the young man to bring into the home as he was marrying into the girl's place. The old lady went to a cupboard and brought out a wooden dish or basin from which she couted out one hundred and seventy-five pounds "now" said she "anyone who is coming here will have to put down one pound for every soveriegn herre" The young fellow could not do that so that ended the matchmaking.
