- The 23rd of October both simple and sober,
I went down to Newport, to sell an old cow,
To that fair of renown, which is held in the town
Called the Bullock fair day, which the whole of you know

The morning being shrill, I felt rather ill,
Myself and my comrade, went down to John Ryan's
Who kept a nice shop, and a beautiful drop.
Like the dew in the morning, that sparkles and shines

We had two pints of stout, 'twas then we walked out,
We said 'twas too early to take any more,
For fear we'd get tight, and blind drunk before night,
As it happened to many in Newport before.
4 verse
'Twas than half past eight, when I thought 'twould come wet, Such numbers of people, I ne'er saw before,
They were there from Murroe, Ballina, Killaloe, Castleconnell, Birdhill and likewise Cappamore.
From Tour and Fidane, Ballinahinch and Gurtshane,
The Mines , Killoscully, Chrishana and Glown,
Foilduff and Curreeney and Barnadomeeny,
The Milestone, Kilcommon, Coolmore and Loughisle.
