    One hundred years have passed since Thomas Davis sang the praises of O'Brien of Ara and the valiant chiefs of Eily O'Carroll. The planter and despoiler are in possession of their ancient patrimony. They themselves have had to seek refuge in the mountain fastnesses of the Silvermines, Keeper and Slieve Phelim ranges; that extensive tract east of Loc Dearg and bordering on the plain of Limerick. From earliest times these grand old hills have been the asylum of the distressed children of the Gael.
