    I grow lonely as I pass each lad and comely lass
    That once used greet me warmly on my way to early Mass
    With their winning ways and greeting as they pass me up and down
    Sure my heart will break, when my leave I take of dear old Newport Town.

    Farewell awhile to Gortnanoe where I often chased the hare,
    To Cahir hills and Carrowkeale and to Cully mountains bare,
    To sweet Clare Glens and it's flowery dells where I oft strolled up and down,
    Must I leave these scenes and the friends I love, in dear old Newport town.

    How lovely is the pigeon's coo and sad the blackbirds lay,
    And loud on high the thrush's song, on a long bright Summer's day,
