  1. The only historical fact I could find out about Newport, apart from Castlewaller was that Cromwell's army passed by here or near here on its way to the siege of Limerick. It is said locally that it up a hill in the next parish - Killoscully by the name of Chrisane. It came down the Turnpike Road, and crossed the Mulcaire about 1 1/2 miles to the north of here. The place where the army crossed is referred to as Cromwell's bridge.
