  1. The oldest in this locality do
not know of any hedge schools
which existed at any time. The
oldest school they can remember is
one that was in Denis Madden's inch
Glenculloo. "Inch" is the name applied to the
little level fields by the river bank.
The school building was of mud
and stones and was built on the very
edge of the river. It existed up to seventy
years ago and at that time it
was attend by eighty pupils who came
    from Ballinouse, Curraghquin, and Glenculloo.
In the same inch but removed
    about one hundred yards from
    the school was the teacher's
residence in front of which was a
small plot surrounded by a wall.
This was a garden for the
teacher's use. Mr. O' Dwyer is the only
    teacher remembered to teach in
this school though some say there
    was an assistant with him.
    The school building was
destroyed by a big flood many years ago.
