in butter-paper. Some is left aside for househouse purposes. The rest is packed up to sell at the market.
Long ago people had certain beliefs about their butter being stolen. On May Eve if a person entered a house where the woman was churning he was not allowed to leave the house unless he helped to churn. Under no circumstances could he helped to churn. Under no circumstances could he kindle his (?) in the house. If he did the people believed (believed) that they would have no butter for the year.
If a black cat came to the dairy door on May Eve when the churning was in progress the people believed that some evil person wished to steal the butter. The woman should get an iron and redden it beat away the cat. This would keep the cat away in future.
