    The poorest of the inhabitants - the labourers depending on their day's wages for food - were the first to fall victims to the hunger.

    the hungry man to join them. He did so, eating ravenously the share set before him. When leaving, he returned his thanks thus:
    "God bless you Billy Hough, that is the only bit of food that went into my stomach within the last three days".

  2. (d) A certain family living near B. Hough were suffering from the great hunger, but pride kept hidden their wants. They would not ask or beg - they would die sooner than beg.
    The kind old farmer skilfully made a bargain with the starving family for some worthless pieces of old irons. When the bargain was completed the irons were brought in a bag to Hough's house by one of the hungry children.
    Looking at the pinched face of the child the good man was moved with compassion.
    "Give some meal to the child as payment for those things" he said in a matter of fact tone of voice.
