  1. The houses in this district were usually made of clar and wattles. The roof was of thatch - either straw or wheaten reed. In those days the farmers usually grew their own wheat, the straw of which was used to thatch houses.
The houses consisted of two or three rooms and the kitchen. Others were made of a smaller kind and consisted of one room and the kitch. It was no strange night to see a settle-bed in the kitchen, when the rooms were to small for the whole household.
