- About thirty years ago a workman who lived in this district by the name of John MacNamara, employed by Mr. Hannan (former owner of bakerrely Castle) made a great walking record to two fairs. He carried a bunch of cattle to belonging to Mr. Hannan to a fair at Limerick and returned with more cattle which made twenty four miles in all. On returning to his employers residence he was informed that he had to start for the fair at Rathkeale that night which was twenty-two miles away. He went to the fair and came home a tired man, but he had to appear at work at eight o' clock next morning.
Tom Brien was a good runner in his young days and won many prizes. He was a good high jumper too. There used to be marathon races every year at Holy Cross and he won it for four years. He ran from gavins back by Rockbottom up to the cross of Ballymanty up to the [?] Pike of Bruff and back to gavins again which was six miles. Tuohy was his opponent whom he beat four hundred yards. He jumped 6 six feet two ins in height.
The only man in this locality who won fame at heigh jumping was Patrick O'(continues on next page)
