  1. Marriages generally take place in this district during Shrove. It was thought unlucky to marry at any other time of the year. The month of May is thought to be unlucky time to be married also the Harvest as the old saying is the “sheaf that is bound in the harvest is sure to be opened in Spring”. There is also an old rhyme about the days.
    “Monday is for health,
    Tuesday is for wealth,
    Wednesday the best day of all,
    Thursday for crosses
    Friday for loses and Saturday no day at all.”
    Some matches take place in this district and money is given as a dowry. On the day of the marriage “straw boys”
