  1. Sir John Burke was the last of a noble family of Burkes of Brittas Castle in the parish of Murroe in the County of Limerick. During the penal times, Sir John had Mass celebrated in his Castle (in defiance of the British law of that period) and being a great friend of the Dominican Priests in Limerick, he brought a priest of that order to Brittas to celebrate the Mass. The soldiers however got to know it, and while the Holy Sacrifice was in progress, they surrounded the Castle. His friends prevailed on Sir John to escape which he did by means of a subterranean passage from which he emerged on the banks of the Mulchair river which flows near the Castle. He crossed
