The man they met was Ned of The Hill. They guessed it after some time, or found it out later. They were so much impressed with his charming personality and bearing that they approached the authorities later on and obtained a pardon for him and the withdrawal of the reward offered for his capture.
It would seem as if Ned did not know this anymore than Tomás bán at the time the latter betrayed and beheaded him. I got this story and the following one from Mr James Maher, Croughmakeen, Farmer age 33 yrs (an ex-pupil of mine)
He got it from his father, Mr Michael Maher of the sameplace. It was this young man's grandfather, Mr. Jeremiah Ryan of Renevanna, who died a few years ago aged about 92 yrs. Who told me Croughmakeen meant "The hill of Cippins". As such I have it marked on the sketch map. (I could find no other meaning for it from any other source.)- Informant
