During the Penal Days there was a gallows erected on the roadside between Knockane and Emly. Here many a poor peasant was strangled by the "bandogs" of the law but after the year 1798 this cruel work was done away with.
About eighty or ninty years ago a man who was riding a horse was passing beside the gallows at a very late hour. He suddenly beheld three big bloodhounds breathing flames of fire out their mouths and nostrils. His frightened horse dashed away at a furious pace and the horrified rider could scarcely hold his grip in the saddle. He had not gone far when the hounds passed him out. They then slowed down and turned back. The horse bolted and threw the man on to the road. After a short time he got up and ran to a wayside cabin where he banged loudly on the(continues on next page)- Collector
