Her daughters got very little education as when they grew to womanhood they were unable to read write or count.One night “The Poor Scholar” came the way and remained a night at Mrs. Hayes house. During the night Mrs. Hayes showed him a flag which had been “at the back of the fire” by her for years and on which there was some writing.
“The Poor Scholar” examined the flag and told her that the writing on it was Gaelic in Latin Characters, and he translated the writing for her which told her that there was gold hidden so many paces from “this tree”.Mrs. Hayes then pretended to let the whole matter drop but the next night when the “Poor Scholar” was gone she gave a doze of poteen – or some kindred spirit to her husband and then put him to bed so that he would be out of harm’s way.
