Captain Bailey was beloved by the tenants of Lough Gur and neighbourhood.
He often took the part of the tenants and often saved them from the "Rack Rents".
He was a sub-agent to the *De Fanes.
Once when coming from Castleconnel to Lough Gur he saw some tenants being evicted for "Rack Rents" by a party of military under Captain Barrett from Bruff.
The Captain was very cruel and committed a cruel deed.
Captain Bailey came on the scene and pursued him and overtook him at Ballingirlough where then two Captains fought a duel and in which Bailey was the vistor. Captain Barrett was killed. 1
Captain Bailey was a well known drinker and duellist. Often at parties he was the last to "Blow the Whistle" which means
