- 19. Staker William WallaceWilliam Wallace was born in Bottomstown. He was commonly known as Staker Wallace. When Cromwell had ordered the landlords to collect heavy rates from their tenants, the tenants were not able to pay them. A couple of tenants were evicted, and the landlords were very bad. Staker Wallace and three or four more, planned to burn the house of a landlord, who was living in Kilfinane. The landlord’s house was a very large house, and there was an archway under it. At about two o’clock in the morning Staker Wallace, and his companions went through the town of Kilfinane with a load of hay, and pulled up in front of the landlord’s house, and went into the archway.They set fire to the hay, and part of the landlords house was burned. The landlord escaped. There was a rumour going about the district of Kilfinane that Staker Wallace was at the burning of the landlords house. When Staker Wallace heard this, he went out on the run. One day he was going about the fields. He had his white flannel coat(continues on next page)
