This song was supposed to be written by a Spailpín who was hired by a farmer at the "Hiring Fair" of Kilmallock.
This fair is still held in Kilmallock each July.

The song is very popular among the agricultural workers of the farming community. It is sung by them in a derisive manner to show their disgust of the treatment meted out to them by some farmers
