- Once there lived an old miser who hated to pay his workman his wages. At the beginning of the year he made a bargain with the boy whichever of them found fault with the other was to have his ears cut off. Well, this worked out very well for the miser, for when the end of the year came he treated his boys so badly that they had to grumble with it, and then rather than have their ears cut off, they ran away without any pay.
