  1. Story from Mr. Carroll, Carrigeen, Croom. From Brigid Carroll.
There were two brothers sleeping together and every night for a long time the younger, Ned woke up in the small hours to find that Tom, the elder had gone out. He never heard him going nor coming back, for he was a powerful man to sleep.
But as last he made up his mind to stay awake and follow Tom and find out where he went. After failing a few nights he succeeded at last in keeping awake and at 12 o'clock Tom got up and dressed himself and set off. Ned was soon on his heels and caught up to him. "Where are you going asked Tom. "I'm going to wherever you are going" answered Ned. "Well" said Tom, "I'm giving you one warning if you come with me. Don't speak one word from here till we come back again if you want to come home safely". Ned promised he would keep silent and tom told him they were going where there were a crowd of horsemen and said he, "There will be a horse for me and a plough for you. You are to go spreadlegs on the plough".
