   the church in Croom and had the rep-utation of being a great Matthematician. He died in 1861. {He was a particular friend of Tom Steele, the Irish patriot with whom he collaborated in producing and patenting a diving-bell which was a great success}

   (i) Fr. John Quinlan suceeded him. He died in 1892 and he was followed by

   (j) Rev. James OShea who was transferred to Kilmallock in 1904.

   (k) Rev. Tadg Lee suceeded him and he died on Xmas day 1907.

   (l) Rev. Father I. Curtin P.P. Cappagh was transferred to Croom on the death of Fr. Lee.

   I am indebted to the Very Rev. Cannon Curtin P.P. Croom for this list as well as the foregoing.

   Hedge Schools

   In Skaugh, John Herlihy R.C. had a stone and lime built school with a thached roof. It cost £16 to£20.
   1 Protestant and 105 Catholic scholars.

   Same townland (which occupies more than three-quart ers of the present village of Croom. D.O'C). Pat Mac [Maho] Mahon. stone and lime house which cost £20.
   130 Catholic pupils.

   In Maghera. Ed. Bennett was paid £9 to £30. had a stone and lime school. 5 Prot. and 75 Cath pupils.
