  1. (1) It would not happen to Jim Dillon, was a saying often heard in this district in times past. Jim was a local carman or carrier he had a liking for whiskey and when he took too much often lost goods on the road from Limerick and sometimes fell off his car but always escaped severe injuries so the saying was often applied to a person who lost anything or got a fall.
    (2) A straw best shows how the wind blows is a saying applied to people who shouts preference with meaning to notably in politics.
    (3) The mercy of God is nearer than the door is derived from the Irish and was always used in that tongue when some good news was heard or some good fortune happened or some much needed help came.
    (4) One Swallow never made a Summer is a saying sometimes heard and is used when much is expected and little recieved.
