- Long ago in Askeaton, the people played hurling & foorball, throwing the weight.
The Askeaton hurling team played another team here some years back. + it happened that the Askeaton goal-keepers hurley was broken in a tussel around the goal. The ball came into him from all directions & he drew in them left and right with his piece of a hurley, but the Askeaton backs were not good enough to keep out the other side's forwards and in the end they got a goal.
Askeaton were beaton in this match.
After the match the captain of the visitors went over to the Askeaton side and said that if his side had that goal-keeper they would win the "County Championship". Lond ago there were great sports in the Barrack Field. Every evening a great crowd gathered at the Barrack. The evening's sport consisted of -
throwing the weight - long jumping and high jumping and Tug - O'War. They had a football team here also. They also played cricket in the "Green Askeaton.
