  1. The Famine effected the district very much. The district was very populated at that time. Knockfierna was the most thickly populated place in the district but there is now only the ruins of many of the houses to be seen. The year of the famine the potato crop failed. The stalks withered and burned and that was how the people knew the blight was coming on the potatoes In the ground the potatoes decayed and blackened. They were sown by making a hole in the surface and put the sgiolán into the hole and then covered them. The
