- Care of the farm Animals 30-5-38
The following are a list of domestic farm animals, cows, bullocks, horses, sheep, pigs and goats. Cows have got names. People call them after the place they purchase them from, such as “Abbeyfeale, Condon, Quinn, Looby, etc. The cow houses are mostly modern and usually contain bails. The house in which the cows are was called a “byre” or sometimes a stall. Sometimes the cows are tied to a stake by the head, but bailing has now become frequent.
The tyings used are fetters and spancels. A “pookeen” is put on a thieving cow. A person who comes for milk on May eve should never get it. It is unlucky to enter a house where cows are being milked without saying “God Bless”. An old riddle says:- Ink ank under bank ten drawing four? which means a woman milking a cow. It is said that pigs see the wind.
A local priest had a beautiful horse which to his great disappointment began to pine away.(continues on next page)
