in older times people used to make their own candles. A great maker of candles was Mr J Noonan Castleishon. For making them he had a mould like a long tube a the mould had a hole in the centre for the wick. The wick was made of cotton threads platted together, the tread when platted should be held in the centre, then fat is melted and poured into the mould and left set. When it is set the mould is heated and the candle will slip out. Other wicks were made of the centre of the rush.
