  1. The old Irish people had always a custom of starting the day with prayer. In the morning when they awoke, they blessed themselves and returned God thanks for the nights sleep, and for bringing them safely throgh the dangers of the night. When going on a journey they said "God speed us, or God speed all travellers." When they went into bed at night they said a prayer as follows:-
"Here as I lay down to sleep,
To God I give my sol to keep.
And if I die before I wake
To God I give my soul to take
There are four corners in my bed,
There are four angels at my head,
St Mathew, Mark, Luke and John,
God bless the bed that I lay on".
