  1. The bread they baked long ago was made from barley, wheat and oats. Sometimes they made potato cake. They put a cake into the bastible, hung the cover over it, put a couple of lumps of coal or turf or roots on it and leave it there to rise.
    The farmer switched the wheat, winnowed with a sieve and ground it into flour at home in a quern.
