  1. The houses long ago were made of mud and stones. The mud was mixed with the stones, and left get hard. When it was hard, it was white washed. There were no glass windows. Instead, there were timber shutters. Sticks and turd were burned in the fire. A candle called a "penny dip," gave light. Often there were no chimneys, only a hole in the roof.
