  1. There was a forge in Kells in the year 1798. It was built in the shape of a rectangle, and was covered with sheet iron. The door was made in the shape of a horse-shoe. The smith made pikes for the pikemen of 1798. It is said, that the smith who worked in that forge, used to throw a fourteen pounds sledge over the battlements of Castleshen castle. The water that is used in a forge, is said to be a cure for sores.
