    A couple of years ago there was a man in the parish of Duagh, and every time one of his cows calved, she died. At last, when two of his best cows had died he made up his mind that he would try to find the cause of it.
    One night when one of his cows was calving he went out into the corner of the cow-house with a loaded shot-gun. He was there about an hour when a man with a mask on his face came into the cabin and cut a piece of hair off the tail of the cow that was going to calf. The man let the thief go outside the door and then he fired at him. The thief was so frightened at the blaze of the gun that he dropped the hair, and ran away. Since then any other cow belonging to the man did not die.
