  1. In the merry days of boyhood, when we never knew a care,
    But just tripped it to Newcastle, to the circus or the fair,
    When a batter from a hurley,
    On the shoulder, skull, or heel,
    Filled the other boy's with envy which they never could conceal.
    And the joy we found in Summer calling gentle crooked trees,
    The we chopped down in Winter.
    When the chill was in the breeze, And the hurley's that we fashioned.
    Were a bully recompense
    For the midnight raid and scramble through the old furze fence
