  1. The local fairs are held in the town of Newscastle West or in the town of Abbeyfeale. Long ago the fairs were held about a mile out from the town of Abbeyfeale. There was a great fair held every [?] of December about a mile out from the town of Abbeyfeale, it was called the "Purt fair", because it was over looking Purt castle and often this field was thronged with people until it would be dark at night.
    A great deal of faction fighting was carried on. The weapons used were blackthorn sticks and often the thorns would never be cut. Some people would carry two sticks and some would ride on horse-back. On those days there was no law and no one to stop rows
