    He wrote some fine books. People of the locality used to go to his father's school. They had no copies in those times like we have now, but used slates and slate pencils. The most important subjects were Reading Writing and Arithmetic. There was no Irish taught in those hedge schools. I know a man by the name of Michael Hennessy a near neighbour who went to the hedge school at Clouncagh. He is about the age of seventy-five years.
