- Famine Times. 15-6-'38In the years eighteen forty six and eighteen forty seven the great famine occurred in Ireland. During that time the people suffered very much in nearly every district. Before that time this district was more thickly populated that it is now.At the present time several old ruins can be seen in this district. The blight came on the potato crop, because in those years the people used not spray their potatoes at all, because they did not know how.It was also a wet year and the potatoes decayed in the ground. When the potatoes failed the people ate turnips and other things instead. They had corn in the country but they had to sent it to England.When the government saw that a lot of the people were dying they gave them Indian meal to eat, and they used eat it raw. The people died in this district in great numbers with the hunger, and with the great sickness that followed it.Written by:- Mortimer Ahern,
