to make a man. How this happened is, one time there was a poor man and he wanted to become a tailor, but he had no money. So one day he went to a factory, there were sixteen tailors in the factory.
The man told them to go round in a ring, the tailors did as they were told and the poor man stood in the middle. Then he said to them "let ye all throw me in something". All of them threw him in a shilling each and when he had the sixteen shillings in his hand he said; "Ye sixteen tailors made a man of me". There is another saying, "a stitch in time saves nine".
