  1. Mary Ahern,
    Coolybrown,
    Ardagh.
Travelling folks still call at my house. The same people have been doing so for many years. They are very poor, and they sell many articles. Usually made of tin, in the form of household utensils, and people buy from them. These travellers are not generally welcome.
They remain in the same places for longer than a night. They sleep in caravans and camps, and do have food with them. The alms they accept, are tea, sugar, meat, flour and potatoes. They either travel in cars or caravans or sometimes walk. They travel in bands and families. They usually come to the district at Easter and fair days. The McDonaghs, Quilligans and Flynns are the names best known to us.
Told to me by my grandfather.
    John Ahern,
    Coolybrown,
    Ardagh.
