  1. To write a line a sad, sad line,
    But indeed my pen is frail,
    To write on this sad demise[?],
    I'll surely have to fail;
    I only wish I could change this,
    Then I'd write a line with joy
    To the memory of Dr. John our noble saintly boy.
    In March so cold and dreary
    He was then called away.
    To that bright home beyond the skies
    Where only angels stay.
    In the cemetary of Kilrodane[?],
    He is taking his last sleep.
    Where the birds now sing their lovely notes,
    And the gentle swallows sweep[?].
    It's sad to think your voice is stilled
    For ever evermore;
    That heart so true and hand so kind
    Alas! they are no more
    But God's own way we never know;
    We cannot understand.
    Why He always cuts the choicest flowers,
